The recent advancements in satellite technologies have ushered in a new era of efficiency and agility for the defense and aerospace sector. This has allowed players across this sector to improve safety, optimize customer service and system management, and, of course, transform military operations.
One of the major areas where satellite technology steals the show is satellite navigation. The Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) enables aircraft to fly directly from origin to destination on the most fuel-efficient routes and navigate complex low-altitude terrain. Satellite navigation allows aircraft to fly closer together, increase takeoff and landing rates, and minimize noise and CO2 emissions from continuous ascent and descent. This is essential to save aviation fuel and reduce the environmental impact of flights.
Many countries have become dependent on military satellites for national security since they were introduced. Military forces increasingly use space-based assets to fulfill their missions, so these technologies have become especially important for communications networks – enabling users to always be connected and ready to collect and disseminate data on the ground, in the air, and space.
Global positioning system (GPS) trackers, laser designators, use of satellite-communications gear by soldiers to talk directly to pilots overhead, and the extensive use of satellite imagery are examples of the advancements in satellite tech. Soldiers are equipped with the capability to accurately identify the locations of targets from a safe distance, relay the target coordinates via satellite phones to warplanes circling overhead, and get back on their horses to ride to the next target.
